Some events in life are so frustrating that you just can't help but tell everyone about them. This last Saturday I experienced one of those events. The event of interest was the Fundamentals of Engineering exam (or FE for short). This exam is a professional exam that is the first step for engineers who desire to become a certified professional engineers. The exam takes 8 hours to complete and costs $130 to sign up.
I decided that I should take the exam so I had the option of certifying later. I paid my money and on Saturday I went to take the exam. The exam was held in Salt Lake City at the State Fairgrounds. Even though we were the only ones using the fairgrounds on that particular day they still felt the need to charge everyone $3 for parking. Then they put us in an exhibition barn with cheap, hard, molded plastic patio chairs to sit on. The tables were old, had the bolt holes in the top, and were splintery. The best part though were the bathrooms, they didn't have toilet paper or paper towels in them. $130 for an 8 hour test and that is where they stick us. I couldn't believe it.
