Packing

Packing has been an adventure to say the least. I will put something in a box and Brett will take it out. Nothing has gotten done, which is so frustrating with the move less then a week. Lucky for me grandma and grandpa came into town to help, and that has been nice. Now I can just pack until I am needed. I uploaded a picture of Brett and his mischief, as you can see he is not being a huge help. I am surprised that I have not packed him in a box accidentally, he is 20lbs. I would be slightly hard to mistake him for anything. He like to crawl amongst the towering boxes, which I am sure we views as his own private city!

Packing has taken me FOREVER!! Where did we get all of this junk from? could it have multipled on it's own?? I can't imagine that I would save that much stuff, just so that I could give it away to DI in a few months. I am sure that some people think that I am a pack rat, I really try not to be. All of my stuff has so many useful uses, I promise. Next years New Years Resolution is to throw out all the junk, I have a whole year to save up so that I can have a sense of accomplishment next year. It just might be the only resolution I keep! As my DI pile grows bigger and bigger, I am coming to the realization that less really is more.

Unkie Bunky and Aunt Sandwich

We have been needing to have some friends over for the last year, but with all that has gone on with school and correlating schedules, it just hasn't happened. Since we are moving in a few weeks we have been having people over all the time, which is great for me cause I love it!!

Monday Unkie Bunky and Aunt Sandwich(Sean and Samantha Floyd) came over, We love these guys! We ate dinner and chatted, before they left we set up a tripe date with them and us and her brother and my sister for friday.

Friday rolled around and Sam's brother ditched us so we played games until 1ish a.m.

Saturday we all went to go get massages :) and then had breakfast at our house.

Sunday we had the Perry's (TC and Ashley)over, we love these guys too. Now that I think of it there isn't anyone we don't like/love! We had homemade pizza for dinner and played Bohnanza!

Today is going to be filled with more food, friends, and games!

Uh, I don't know how many of you really want to get together with us before we go. If you want to hang out and have tons of fun with us(I know we don't look like tons of fun, but just ask around, we are) just leave a comment and we would love to have you over. Be sure to be quick we only have a week and a half left!!

Brett's B-day is in a week and a half. Should I throw him a birthday party??

Not The Tupperware!

Brett absolutely loves my Tupperware, He is simply drawn to it like a magnet. If I turn my back for two seconds, no matter where he is in the house, he can find the Tupperware. I can then come back and find him in the Kitchen pulling all of the Tupperware out of the cabinet(not that I am the least bit surprised.) I have a lot of Tupperware, so Brett has not trouble covering the Kitchen floor in it. I have to admit that sometimes I get frustrated after just washing all of the Tupperware, and then catching Brett throwing them all over the floor again. I just want to scream, "Not the Tupperware! Go throw your toys all over the house!" I have found how ever that he is more attracted to things that I tell him he can't play with. I thought that I would be clever and tell him he could play with the Tupperware, hopeing that he would stop(reverse psychology never hurt anyone right?) Yeah that didn't work. I have decided that the Tupperware isn't worth getting myself all worked up about, I will just keep a sink of hot soapy water on hand! As you can see the Tupperware cupboard is the perfect height for this kid, guess it is my fault to begin with.

The 5th Ward

After living here for three years and moving three times, we have always managed to stay in the 5th ward. How you may ask, we don't know, guess it was just meant to be. Every time we had to move, we would look all over Provo and surrounding areas to find a home. Some how every time we would always find a home in the 5th Ward, some times barely in the 5th Ward. We always knew that is were we were meant to be there(despite all of the pleas from the neighbors to attend the family ward) and we loved the ward. Now as we are two weeks away from journeying far from the 5th Ward, our beloved 5th Ward got new boundaries on Sunday. Sadly enough the Wierschke's didn't make the boundary cut by two houses. We are officially suppose to be in the 109th Ward that meets at 11am, but we are begging them to let us stay for just two more Sundays(If we would have been here longer we would have totally switched.) Oh the memories that we have had in the 5th Ward, how we will miss you. You truly are the best married student ward ever!!

What a Great Saturday!!

So my sister is a student at the Utah College of Massage Therapy, and she has been trying to get me to go get a massage for quite some time now. Unfortunately I have always been busy(and besides why go to the school when I can get one for free at home,) until today. We got up at 6:45am(Jon was so good to agree to watch Brett, since he has been a little stinker lately) and ran to the school, waited to two hours and got a massage. Which felt so good(in case you were wondering!) Next Saturday the college is having a two for one deal, two people go and get a massage for $25($12.50 per person for a one hour massage, but you have to have two people to get that deal). I am going to go if any one wants to go with me, we do have to go early(leave by 6am)or we will have a two+ hour wait!

I have been wanting a Digital SLR for several months now. Unfortunately we have never been rich enough to own the one Jon wants to get me(it is over $1,000). I think everyday I become more desperate to get one, but keep shoving the thought out of my mind, due to Other expenses that will keep my family alive. The other day I expressed my undying wish to Jon, and he cleverly concocted a plan to make it work. Jon has decided that we are definitely going to need to save up for this camera, and that is going to take time(if you wish to donate money let me know ;) ) We have both also been trying to lose unwanted weight that we gained since we have been married. Jon has some suits and I have a dress that we want to fit into. The deal is that when we can fit into those again, we can get the digital camera. I am so excited I have already started to work out. Sadly I have a long way to go, but I think I can make it. Any tips or advice would be greatly appreciated.

I went to the hospital to see a friend that just had her baby last night. After I got home I worked outside on the lawn. Jon was already out there mowing and so I did the weed eating for him. After working out in the yard I came in and helped Heather study for finals. My contribution was letting her massage me so she could get some practice. Rough life huh? Then it was off to bed for us.

Today was a great day!

Ethanol: Part 2

I was planning on writing another post outlining more of the problems of ethanol. However, the Daily Herald had an interesting article on ethanol that covered most of the additional points that I was planning on making. So in the spirit of laziness and not wanting to write something that has already been written here is THE LINK. For those who don't want to read the article this is a quick summary of the main points.

- Ethanol production has caused corn prices to triple since 2005
- The increase in food prices due to ethanol is estimated at $15 billion in 2007
- Given tax breaks, subsides, and price ethanol cost America $31 billion in 2007
- Global food prices have risen 83% in the last 3 years (the time of the US ethanol push)
- Journal of Science estimates that ethanol doubles greenhouse gases due to deforestation and gas used in farm equipment.
- Ethanol also contributes to greenhouse gases because it cannot be shipped by pipeline so it is shipped by truck.
- Corrected for energy content the cost equivalent to wholesale gasoline is $6.67/gallon

Ethanol wastes land, wastes energy, pollutes, causes hunger and unrest in the world, and we spend billions of dollars to support it. Go us.

Why I Hate Ethanol

Each time I go grocery shopping I get more and more disgusted at the price of food increases. I know that there are many reasons why the price of food is going up: the devaluing of the dollar, food shortages throughout the world, increasing transportation costs, and so on. Many of these factors are outside of our control in the United States and some take a long time for the effects to be noticeable, but I believe that there is one area that can be quickly changed and where the effects will be readily noticeable…ethanol.

The following is a detailed partial reasoning behind my disdain for ethanol, if you aren’t interested in the details then feel free to skip to the conclusion at the bottom.

The United States is the largest single producer of corn in the world, producing 42% of the world’s supply during fiscal year 2006 (US Grains Council). For fiscal year 2006 81.8 million acres of land was planted with 75.1 million acres of land being harvested. The harvest yielded 11,114 million bushels of corn for a growth density of 136 bushels of corn per acre planted. After exports the domestic supply total was 9,136 million bushels. Of that amount 1,603 million bushels were used for ethanol. (USDA WASDE-457, April 9, 2008)

The estimates for fiscal year 2007 are similar but with a drop in total area planted/harvested to 78.3 and 70.6 million acres respectively. From that an estimated 10,535 million bushels of corn is expected, down slightly from the previous year. After exports the estimated domestic supply is expected to be 9,086 million bushel, again lower than 2006, but the amount used for ethanol is expected to increase to 2,117 million bushels. (USDA WASDE-457, April 9, 2008)

From the above numbers we can calculate that the percentage of corn grown that is used for ethanol is 14.4% for 2006 and 20.1% for 2007. The amount of our domestic supply that is used for ethanol is 17.5% for 2006 and 23.3% for 2007. Using the production numbers from fiscal year 2007 we can see that 8.4% of the world’s supply of corn is used up in producing ethanol for the United States, but how much ethanol do we get from all that corn?

The average ethanol yield from dry mill processing is 2.65 gallons per bushel, for wet mill processing the yield dips to 2.55 gallons per bushel (Argonne National Labs) (PDF warning). Using the yield estimates from fiscal year 2007 and assuming that all processing is done dry mill then we get an annual ethanol production of 5.61 billion gallons. This appears to be a large amount of fuel but let me put that amount into perspective.

Ethanol has the unfortunate characteristic of a low energy density. This means that for every gallon of ethanol you don’t get as much energy as you would get out of a gallon of gas and so your car can’t go as far. The following table (Wikipedia) will give an idea of how the energy density of ethanol compares. The units are MJ/L but the units aren’t important, the thing to notice is the difference between energy sources.

Nuclear Fission 1,5000,000,000
Gasoline 34.6
Body fat metabolism 35
Ethanol 24

Ethanol only contains about 70% of the energy per gallon that gasoline does. This means that if you had car that got 30 MPG with gasoline then on ethanol you would only be getting about 21 MPG. A result of this is that the 5.61 billion gallons of ethanol produced can only offset the consumption of 3.89 billion gallons of gasoline per year. That number still seems fairly large so let’s compare it to the average oil consumption in the United States.

Most oil consumption is measured in barrels but a simple conversion of 42 gallons per barrel will give us numbers that we can work with. The US petroleum consumption is currently at about 20,687,000 barrels/day (Energy Information Administration), this is equivalent to 869 million gallons per day or 317 billion gallons per year. All of this oil does not go to gasoline but almost half does. The US motor gasoline consumption is 388.6 million gallons per day (EIA) or 142 billion gallons per year. The ethanol produced from our corn is enough to offset 2.7% of our gasoline consumption and 1.2% of our annual oil consumption.

For ethanol to be economical it relies heavily on subsidies. In 2006 $7.0 billion was spent on corn ethanol subsidies. Of this amount, $5.4 was windfall profits for farmers. This money came from 3 sources

1. $0.51/gallon blenders credit = $2.5 billion (your tax dollars)
2. $0.9 billion in corn subsidies for ethanol corn (your tax dollars)
3. $3.6 billion extra paid at the pump

For all of this we are less than 1.2% more energy efficient and we reduced our greenhouse gas emissions by 1/19 of 1%. (zFacts.com)

Conclusion

Ethanol is dumb. It uses almost 10% of the worlds corn supply to offset our oil use by less than 1.2% and costs us billions of dollars. How much more good could we do if we provided the corn to the countries that are experiencing food shortages right now? How much more could we offset our oil use if we were to invest the money spent on ethanol into alternative energy research? It is good to be environmentally conscious but we should focus our efforts in activities that do more good than harm.
